Parent and Family Programs

Parent College

Parent College is a support program geared towards helping working Latina mothers. Building off of a support group model, the program helps mothers meet and connect with other women in their community. Each meeting centers around a topic. The first few topics are presented by Next Generation Scholars. These topics have included; how to raise college bound children, how to maintain Latino traditions that will help your children succeed, how to work with your child's teachers, how to read a transcript and plan your child's school career. After these topics, participants are taught how to lead their own group and come up with topics on their own. Next Generation Scholars then assists these mothers in gaining the resources to effectively present these topics. Mothers have wanted to learn how to operate computers which led to asking for help writing resumes, and posting the resumes on the web. Commadres meeting reflect the needs of the mothers. The goal of this program is to share in the process of creating college bound culture and to form bonds of support for mothers as their raise children and broaden their own lives.
